no more DAAP EVER!!!

I'd like to start off by saying...i have no idea how to post comments on this site...at all.. so to everyone that's been commenting thank you so much for your feedback!!! I just have no way of replying to you yet....for some reason the word I need to type..in order to prove I'm not a robot..never loads.....sigh.. so...I'm not ignoring you...I'm just really bad with the internet...

But in more SHAZAMALAMMIN' news!!!! I got accepted to CalArts!!! into the second year of Character Animation no less!! which...i didn't think was possible.. but i seriously hope that wasn't a typo on my acceptance letter..because being able to shave off a years worth of tuition is a godsend... because i am POOR ..alas...seems like my future in a cardboard box on some abandoned boardwalk is a little closer now..hahaha....here's hoping i get a job in the animation industry (Pixar or bust) and the economy doesn't continue to tank in the year 2012... :P

adkfa;kdjfa; i think it's just starting to hit me... i get to start animating in the fall adka;dj man i'm so giddy about that... no more industrial design projects... EVER!!!! on to character design, figure drawing, environments, story classes.... huzzah! Man i cannot WAIT to have professors I respect and who completely qualify for their jobs....unlike DAAP...

oh hay speaking of a complete waste of a quarter... our second project (also my last industrial design project EVER hoorah!) was a point of purchase display.... insert extra barf here... i tried to push it towards my interests as much as possible....so i did a POP display for urban vinyl toys. Originally had it where I was doing DIY munnys from KidRobot, but like... 2 weeks before the damn thing was due my professor was all like... "jk you should make your own store and toy" yeah... great idea... wish we'd decided on that at the beginning of the quarter...so I ended up cranking like mad and doing my own DIY figurines called Chunkies for my own urban vinyl toy, print and apparel store called Moshi Moshi. The company of Moshi Moshi ended up having an entirely nautical theme of characters.... 3 eyed octopus, narwhals, a pirate girl (who is basically sushi girl with a tattoo), skulls and crossbones...

if i had the money i would totally start my own urban vinyl company.. kidrobot and tokidoki are so sweet....even though i don't drop serious cash on collecting the vinyl figures i love the characters these artists come up with (this is one of my favs right now: Heroes of Burgertown ...i pretty much want all of them)

any whoozle.... here's the poster art i did to go on the back of the display:
i'll upload the actualy POP display design art and marketing board later.... apparently blogger is running into internal errors when i try to post more art...

frill

oh hay guys.. some actual industrial design work... only not really.... haha... first project of the quarter (2 weeks) was focused on Biomimicry (which is awesome) so the inspired by nature project was to take an animal, plant etc...and take something from them and find a use for it in a product.... pretty much the whole class went a soft goods route.... bags, shoes, etc..

I did a jacket design based on the Frill Necked Lizard's frill mechanism.... and incorporating that defense mechanism into a hood for a jacket... so below is my inspiration board, sketch board, and then final marketing board...in which we needed to make an advertisement showcasing our product... i went the route of like a billboard/magazine fashion ad for mine... the models have aboriginal body paint since the lizard can be found in Australia:

i lied

so i lied... this is the last post for today... i completely forgot about this doodle. done during figure drawing class in one of my space out moments.... it's a character from The Immortals plotline...Evey (pronounced eh-vee).

and one last post for the day i swear

and some fanfarts....the iron giant, mulan, and avatar one are from like... 2006? 2007? i am embarrassed by their fanfartyness...but i do love me some iron giant, mulan, and avatar the last airbender...the spawn and batman...are from last summer...and i blame my friends as well as the dark knight for being so incredibly awesome...

more oldish stuff

Alphonse Mucha inspired art (2006-2008):

the last one is a commission for http://germancitygirl.deviantart.com/ of her character Tanake Trang and is still in progress.

oh hay more stuff

sushi girl artwork (from 2006-early 2008):

old stuff.... i just don't have the time to do full colored photoshop pieces anymore...here i was learning photoshop and i had a little more time to play around... :/

some random arts

OMYGOODNESS... another post... in rapid succession.. haha didn't want everything all on one post...so i divvied it up..

just a compilation of random doodles/ideas that have been floating around and some stuff from last year that i'm very fond of:

some dancing girls... I draw women too much.. but i wanted to mess with styles a teensy bit...if only for how their legs are drawn as well as for the mohawk and afro girl...because they are my favs.

GOATS!! I actually have a goat....for reals.. his name is Ozzy and he's adorkable...and he really does run like that... I've had a little kid's book idea bopping around that would center on a goat.. but haven't really done much about it.. I just love the idea..goats are such silly animals and there aren't many (if any) big characters out there (animated or in story format) that are goats...i should change that...

my sushi kids!!! these are my brain babies...first real characters that i've poured my love into...left to right: Kimchi Boy (Jin), Sushi Girl (Emily), Saki Girl (Alice), Fortune Cookie Boy (Jonathan, Nate, "Lucky), Miso Soup Boy (Tobias, Tobey), and Green Tea Girl (Gemma). Growing up they had nicknames for each other based off of food. I have so much backstory for these guys i could take up this entire blog with it (next post i'll flesh them out..if not for the three people following this blog..but for myself so i finally have it written down). I'd love seeing this as an animated series for more of a tween and up range.
AND MY OTHER BRAIN BABY!! The Immortals....my epic plot hole full of cliches.... If I could take a year off of school and just draw these guys i would.. i love them so much... The story takes place in the future during the third world war. There's super powers, immortality, action, an epic journey across the world, and not an entirely happy ending. this sketch compilation is like the tip of the iceburg... i have a sketchbook overflowing with concepts for these guys...but that sketchbook is at Calarts right now....hopefully getting me in :P I really want to make this into a graphic novel....badly...

more monty and me

some more Monty and Me "concept" sketches... I worked a little more on making Monty's tiger form more unique... before I was just drawing him realistically.. now he's able to show a bit more personality i think...

also some more sketches of the girl and how she interacts a little with Monty both when Monty is a cat and when he's "imagined" as another animal... and introducing another character. The little boy is her neighbor and they are bffs for reals... even though the girl can be a bit bossy sometimes and the boy hates playing "girly" pretend...she bullies him into it anyways... they need names... it is so hard not to just name her after myself and the boy after my old next door neighbor.. because if anything..i'm just retelling all of our shenanigans...

figure drawing

I'm taking a figure drawing class this quarter...which I love! It's nice to come in for four hours and just relax and draw however i want... no ideating, designing, bleh...i just pop in my headphones and draw....love it

so..here are some gestures and long pose drawings... if they look wonky it's because they are too large to scan so they're just photos of the work... or i just completely suck at drawing the human figure...haha...
gestures are on newsprint with charcoal pencil (1-2 minutes) and the long pose studies (2ish hours) are on colored canson paper with charcoal pencil and white pastel pencil:

I would also like to add that the gesture drawings of the woman are so quick...she held the poses for like.. 2 seconds then would change...not my favorite model...also..models should stay away from tattoos that cover important parts of their anatomy therefore making it impossible to see definition and where to shade.. aka don't tattoo your boobs..ever...if you want to model for a figure drawing class...it makes drawing you exceptionally difficult and it's shockingly unnattractive :P

The guy featured in these sketches is the best model ever. I was so sick of drawing flabby guys... it's great to draw someone whose muscles are defined... you could see every muscle in his back!! it was like drawing a superhero and he's like 50 too... makes me feel so out of shape.
